MX bikes or trail bikes can be used on both the track and trail
MX or Trail the maintenance is close to the same. The bigger difference is how hard the bike is ridden. Are you racing MX or doing hare scrambles?
On the MX course, are you hitting doubles and triples? If so, the suspension and frame take a beating. If on the trails, if hot and dusty, the air filter will get clogged quicker.
Most MX bikes will have a close gear ratio. The trail bikes will often have a wider ratio.
Some people swear that 4strokes are grenades, ready to blow up any second. The 2strokes require at least a top end build every year or even after every race.
